Welcome to the community! Our newest Blue Certified candidate, Six Senses Laamu, has taken the sustainability deep dive.
In this blog post, we share what motivates Six Senses Laamu in being sustainability leaders and joining Blue Certified.
We are inspired by the quote from Baba Dioum “In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught.”
The Maldives is renowned for its unique natural beauty; turquoise waters, rich marine biodiversity, endless white beaches and fresh, clean air. This natural environment provides the ideal conditions for visitors wanting to reconnect with nature, engage in all types of water sports, and experience some of the best recreational diving in the world. However, in the great beauty and marine biodiversity also lies fragility. Tourism, at the level experienced today, has a true impact on both the natural and local environment, creating new challenges for the Maldives as it related to environmental conservation. If we do not manage current practices, the very aspects which bring life to the country’s economy, could well be its downfall.
Unsustainable resource management within the Maldives, coupled with a lack of environmental conservation and a tendency to underestimate the finite nature of coastal and marine resources, is a troubling prospect. Combined with climate change and its visible effects on the Maldivian land and sea scape; accelerated sea level rise, temperature rises, and changes in monsoonal patterns – one can appreciate the danger facing the Maldives and its current position as a popular tourist destination within the global market.
Taking inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” we wish to be catalysts of positive change within the Maldives through being strong proponents of environmental conservation. We would like to set the right example through being the right example and we believe Blue Certified can help.
